MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Volatile forward Bonzi Wells to the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday for guard Wesley Person, a conditional first-round pick in the 2004 Draft and cash considerations.

If Memphis' first round pick in the 2004 Draft is one of the top three picks, the Grizzlies have the option to keep the pick.

"We are very hopeful that this opportunity provides a fresh start for Bonzi in Memphis, and that he enjoys joining a rising young team in the Grizzlies," West said. "We're very optimistic Bonzi will provide a significant presence in our lineup."

Wells is averaging 12.2 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists this season, but he also was stripped of his captaincy and suspended for two games for cursing at coach Maurice Cheeks.

Wells has spent his entire six-year career with in Portland, averaging 13.3 points per game. He averaged a career-best 17.0 points during the 2001-2002 season.

Wells was fined $10,000 last month for making an obscene gesture at a fan after a loss to Philadelphia. Last March, Wells was suspended for one game by Cheeks for "conduct considered detrimental to the team."

Person has averaged 11.8 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.8 assists in his career. His playing time has been limited this season, though, and he's scoring only 5.2 points per game.

"Of course, we lost a veteran player in Wesley who is a true professional and has done a wonderful job for us over the last two seasons," West said. "We certainly wish the best for Wesley as he continues his successful career in the NBA."

During a game in November, Cheeks yanked Wells for taking an ill-advised jumpshot. Wells swore at Cheeks on his way back to the bench and stood on the sideline and continued a profanity-laced tirade. Wells sat out the final 16:17 of the game, and the Blazers quickly lost the lead. The Mavericks went on to win 105-98.

"It just gets old. I'm sick of it," Cheeks said at the time. "I'm sick of always saying he didn't mean it and all that. Players have to be accountable for what they do and what they say."

Portland entered Wednesday with an 8-7 record, tied for fourth in the Pacific Division. Memphis (8-8) is last in the Midwest Division.

Grizz gotta stop getting rid of future first round draft picks. Too bad Qyntel couldn't have been thrown in.

Will Bonzi play tonight & if so will he be the captain for tonight's game? I think he has more experience at captain than Shane. A quality guy to build a great team around. Is Shawn Kemp available? 2 steps forward talent wise, one step back teamwise...

And another draft with nothing to show...

He cries like a lil bitch...A LOT.

I guess if the Grizz finish around .500 they would be in that no man's land area of the draft at pick #14 which is pretty much a crap shoot.
Posted: Dec 4, 2003 3:56 am
Hey man, I'll take #14 as that is about 7 higher than we've been getting and we got Zach Randolph at like #19, sooooo...I used to LUV Bonzi and hope he does well for the Griz, so hope something good for us too over here living the perpetual hell of being a Blazer fan.

hoping for the best... bonzi can ball... and hubie won't take no shit.

i'd take zach randolph over him, though... that's one bad mo fo.

Well, so much for T-Mac or Kobe coming, this trade pretty much eats all the cap-space, if I'm not mistaken. But Jerry wants playoffs NOW, and why not? We can hang with anyone now...

Good luck in PDX, Wes- just say no! I just hope Wes doesn't wake up from his season-long nap this Sunday...

Btw, great win last night, Grizz!

Posted: Dec 4, 2003 3:57 pm
Yes, he CAN. I think he needs a hard ass like Hubie to whip his lil whiny self back into reality. And he will likely be a happier camper living in MEM. Bonz was one of the only players to *not* get busted for weed (Zach got pulled over up the street higher than a mug this Tuesday AM),but his trip is throwin' fits, underachieving, flipping off the fans and cursing out the coach...all the while saying he had "blacked out".
Posted: Dec 4, 2003 4:16 pm
Maybe getting away from Rashizzle will do him good. My guess/hope is he'll be a choirboy for the rest of this season, at least...
Posted: Dec 4, 2003 4:50 pm
That is the word here...check www.oregonlive.com , Sports, Blazers for an article written by John Canzano about the Sheed-Bonz Terror Twin situation.

He'll probably do fine there...do you have any smart ass psychos on your team though??? That is who Bonzi obviously gravitates to.

Posted: Dec 5, 2003 8:10 am
Is the game in Memphis on Sunday??? Will it be televised anywhere but NBA TV? I wanna see the results.

Everyone here is psyched for Bonzi to be gone, but that will likely mean Bonz will have a 20+ game for you guys.

Posted: Dec 5, 2003 1:17 pm
I don't think Bonzi's gonna get "major minutes" (Hubie-speak) at first. He'll probably just get Wes' minutes (15-17 mins/game). If he can just fill the role that Wes was supposed to fill, he'll be off to a good start. So, that means he has to shoot better than 12% from the 3...Make him earn those minutes, Hubie!

a report at halftime:

bonzi got a BIG cheer from the crowd... and went to work. first two posessions were lobs for nice alley oop slams... missed a bunch of shots then swished a couple. he's gonna be killer.

oh yeah, we're up by 20. christian laetner has 65% of their points. really.

Posted: Dec 6, 2003 12:30 am
FUCK Laetner!!!!

Good--I am glad you like the Bonzi.

Hopefully we get crunk on y'all Sunday. WOOF!

saw the lacey underwear, too... and her dad waved down. awww. they were wearing matching grizz hats. that's cute.

let washington almost get back in it via their pesky little guards (including the BK BROILER- beloved ex-grizz Brevin Knight- some very small girl in a lower section had a small sign that said "welcome back BK"! Memphis rules) and some sloppy play but we lead the entire time, never really a question. even though washington played terribly, it was a nice solid win.

2 games over .500- and when we were on tonight, we looked HOTTTTTT!

now we rule the east. the west, i dunno. sunday should be fun!

here's a good piece on Jason "Crybaby" Kidd getting fined after publicly criticizing the officials after the Nets loss to the Grizz after Kidd didn't get a foul on the retreating Stromile Swift as Kidd threw up what Don Poier called the worst excuse for a shot he has ever seen (paraphrase). i think it barely hit the 24 second clock, and had no chance of going in. in football, he would have been penalized for throwing to an area with out a receiver.

from the article:

Kidd, who turned the ball over twice and missed a free throw in the final two minutes, became upset when officials didn't call a foul in the closing seconds.

The Nets attempted 41 free throws in the game, compared with 24 for the Grizzlies.

Kidd sucks. he can ball, but he sucks.

Posted: Dec 6, 2003 6:12 pm
Yeah, Eric I dunno if you saw that "shot" that Kidd got "fouled" on, but he literally jumped sideways into Stromile, then missed the entire backboard...

Grizz looked scary good in the first half, then like they couldn't wait for the game to be over in the 2nd...

Laetner sunk almost every basket and BK is a great player, but Washington is hopeless as a team (duh). That was an ugly game of baskeball, but thank god they did'nt kick our ass in our lousy second half.
I thought Bonzi played a great game and consider it my early x-mas present to have him here in Memphis. I missed J-Will on the court. He was out of uniform on Friday. But was steady sporting a matching velour "Bensonhurst tuxedo" jumpsuit. Like whoa!

Yes! It's true.
Me and my dad wear matching Grizzlies hats to the games.

Don't wanna rain on your parade neccesarily, but Bonzi Wells is an incessantly frustrating player. He was a charmer for his first two or so years here and then he became the bigest inconsistency on the team. The second it became apparent that Zach Randolph was the bigger badass, Bonzi became a lil cry-baby, whining brat.

I can't blame it all on Portland either. Be careful with him, guys. Seriously. He isn't a sweetheart...and he will be inconsistent. I'll eat my hat if he isn't.

Posted: Dec 8, 2003 7:05 pm
Hey Fiery, Bonzi's only under contract with us for this year and next, so if he can just keep his nose clean through this year, I'd say it was worth it. NOBODY around here has any delusions about him, nobody expects him to be an all-star, but he's played like one the 1st 2 games. Read Eric's take on his post play! It's ridiculous, but he's probably the best back-to-the-basket player we've got, and he's 6'5"!

Bonzi: 16 pts, 5 rbs
Wes: 2 pts, 1 reb

I know he looks good to you guys cos well, he is good for you guys!

At least he's wanted there. He was a total jackass the last two years here and he used to be my fave player, period. I am not trying to hate, I do hate. No one let me down more than Bonz. He is just like Rasheed Wallace except about half as good.

Enjoy it while he's on his Prozac and hope he gets shipped off before he starts flipping you guys off, crying nonstop, spitting at other players and throwing basketballs at nice fellow players heads for fun after practice. The guy is a DICK.

duly noted...

Scary? Yes, the Grizz should win their next 3 games--hotlanta (home), Miami, nets (home). Judging from the other schedules, they could be in 1st place or at least tied.

Of course, the short history of the Grizz is just when you have a little faith, they kick your ass...

Posted: Dec 10, 2003 4:15 pm
Yeah, don't count those chickens, yet. Atlanta smoked Denver last night, hopefully it wore 'em out...
Posted: Dec 11, 2003 2:13 am
Yep, should be in 1st place late sat. night. Not bad.

Anyone seen Ike Austin lately?

Hey, Lacey, what part of this win streak did j-wil get hurt?

You've lost your mind Sherman!
Once we picked up our defense last night we started to make a comeback. 62 points in the second half! Plus Milller scored some important 3s. We did'nt win because JWill was injured and out of the game, we won because we decided to tighten up D and make better shots.
Why do you insist that JWill is the problem?
Since when is JWill the Anti-Sherman?
I thought turtlenecks were your worse enemy...

Grizz ranked number 6th overall by teamrankings.com...I love that site!

Ok, grizz beat miami & tie for 1st place. Dallas plays la & denver plays philly--both will lose!

Posted: Dec 12, 2003 4:55 am
according to teamrankings.com, we will beat the kings at home by 0.7168 points!

who is our best 0.7168 shooter?

i love that site, too!

Posted: Dec 13, 2003 9:28 pm
No more predictions, please, Sherm. Who ever said winning was the best deoderant was right on the money. Grizz had some good, gutty wins in that batch, but had looooong stretches in each game where they just played awful (particularly the Washington, Portland, Atlanta games). Ah well, we're not ready to be a front-runners yet...
Posted: Dec 13, 2003 10:44 pm
That wadn't a prediction...it was just what would have happened if the Grizz had won, which they should have--even though they stank for most of the game. Nice comeback twice, though, & if Pau could have gone up strong at the end, they still would have won. I would have taken out pau at halftime & put the big moose on Odom since he was making gasol look so bad.

Oh, well, J-will will soon be back!

Bonzi, perhaps the greatest-named Grizzlie?
